About the Horses
We currently have 17 horses and ponies , of all different shapes and sizes, at our stables. Our horses come to us from all different situations, some find us and others we find. Our aim is to have and maintain happy and healthy horses which can have a permanent home with us to the end of their lives. Every one of these animals has the love and attention of our riders.
The horses are our biggest residents and are often our least troublesome! We have four horses in total. Twiggy, Buster, Mona and Apollo.
Twiggy is a 6 year old chestnut mare. She is a 16.2 thoroughbred x Irish Draft. She can be a bit grumpy at times and has not done much as has not had a regular rider. Due to this inconsistent start she needs bringing on slowly and will be doing steady work this year with the hope of competing next year. She likes picking things up in her mouth like ropes and brooms. She doesn't like having her back hooves picked out or the back straps on her rug being done up .
Buster is a 15.1 Highland cross Cob. We saw Buster was up for sale due to a change in the circumstances of his owner. We saw him advertised on the internet and, as we were in need of a heavier horse, we decided to take a look. Buster likes rolling and getting muddy. He doesn't like leaving his new friends in the field while he has to go and do schooling work. Buster is living at Rowney Green until he is fully fit and until all the new stables have been built at the home field. His best friends at the moment are Molly and Tully, but he has also recently fallen in love with Bess.
Apollo is a 15.1 bay gelding. He was re-homed with us as his previous owner was a novice rider and could not handle him. He was very naughty when we first had him and would only go backwards but he has since been re-schooled. He likes jumping but is getting much better at flat work. He likes fizzy pop (although he only has it as a treat) but he hates being left in the field while everybody else goes out. His best friends are Bobby and Freddy but he also likes the girls especially Mona, Indy and Bess. He is also known as Polly.
Mona is a 15.1 bay mare. She was very thin when she first came to us as she is a thoroughbred cross-Belgian warmblood, which means she is very fine and could not cope with living out as she had to in her previous home. She was very wild when she first arrived and is in the process of being re-schooled. She was also difficult to handle and she had to be sedated for the farrier, but we are now able to put front shoes on her. She is very elegant and loves going out on hacks. She likes to play with her dodecahedron (horse toy) but doesn't like being out without a thick rug on a cold day as she doesn't have a very thick coat. Her best friend is Apollo. Her show name is Little Mo and she is also affectionately called Molly.
Indy is a 14.2 grey Arab x mare. She was given to us by a friend who bought her for ten pounds. Her previous owners had left her in a field for four years and so she was in very poor condition when our friend bought her. She likes to go on hacks and be groomed and is enjoying learning to jump. She doesn't like travelling. Indy is good friends with Belle and Coco and is leader of their little group. She isnt very fond of Bess as she gets quite jealous of her.
Coco is a Connemara cross pony who is 18 years old. He has done general riding activities but has not worked in recent times due to owners other commitments. As he is unfit he will come into work slowly and will mainly be used as a schoolmaster. He likes his new stable but is not too keen at being tacked up. Coco loves to escape from fields to join his friends in another paddock or to try to get back in his stable. He gets on well with Bobby as they are both cheeky.
Toby is a 13.2 Welsh Section C pony. He is about 11 years old. He is very cheeky and is in need of re-schooling as he can be quite naughty to ride. He likes to kick his stable door for attention and is becoming increasingly brave when out on the road. He has now made good friends with Ted and Tara.
Belle is a 13.2 dark bay new forest mare. She was given to us with Snowy (who died this year) when she was no longer wanted. She was going to be sold at Henley market. She gets sweet itch in the summer and often has very poor coat condition in the winter and for this she receives special treatment. She is quite fast and loves to jump but she doesn't like having other mares around as it makes her jealous. Indy and Tara are Belle's new friends.
Tara is the newest little pony at the stables. She is about 13hh, chestnut and 17 years old. She is pleased about having more turn out at this yard as she has been stabled all winter. She comes from the same home as Maisey and we were given her as she was too fast for her previous owner. Tara is currently being re-schooled and will hopefully become a much calmer horse and be much easier to control after a few months of schooling.
Bobby is a 12.1 dark bay gelding. He is very cheeky and gets into a lot of trouble. He was bought as a driving pony and his previous owner bought him from gypsies. Bobby is very playful with all the other horses and he gets on with everybody. He loves to eat, get out of his field, bite anything within reach and cause chaos. He hates bath time!
Ted is an 11.3 bay gelding. He is on loan from a friend who re-homed him from a rescue centre. Ted likes to play with Bobby and now likes jumping but he doesn't like having his bridle put on. Ted's best friend is Bobby and they like to play all the time. He is starting to develop a firm friendship with Toby as they have recently staryed playing together. Ted doesn't like Belle or Freddy as he can be a bit mean to horses who he feels he can bully.
Maisey is a 11.2 grey Welsh section A mare. She is new and we are still getting to know her. She likes carrots and cantering round the field and jumping the fences but she doesn't like staying in as she crib bites. Maisey is devoted to Bess and follows her everywhere!
Bertie is a 10.0 piebald Shetland pony. He came from the same home as Bobby as he was given to his previous owner to settle a debt and he is also a driving pony and is very quiet and can be trusted with small children. He likes eating and sunbathing but he dislikes going anywhere fast. His best friends are Mini and Freddy.
Freddy is a chestnut Shetland pony. He is the baby of the stables as he is only three years old. He likes to play with his friends and go out on walks. He beginning to enjoy his work. Freddy's best friends are Mini and Bertie but he also likes to play with Apollo and thinks he is his mom. Freddy did fancy Maisey but she has since rejected him and started flirting with Ted. Freddie is still in a very experimental stage as he is only three and has since been flirting with Bertie!
Minstrel is a miniature Shetland pony and he is black. He came from the same home as Merlin. he likes to play with his friends and to go on walks. He doesn't like to see the dentist. His best friends are Freddie and Bertie but he also likes to play with Bobby. Minstrel is too big a name for such a small pony so we call him Mini for short.
