Work Experience

Work experience is an important part of your education and each year, particularly in the summer, we do take on people for work experience. This can be arranged either through your school or more informally. Work experience is normally for two weeks but shorter and longer periods can be arranged. What we do at the stables can vary from week to week so each work experience is different but all involve working with horses and lots of team work.

Nina's Account of Her Work Experience
Work experience at the stables was fantastic; i thoroughly enjoyed myself, and saw in depth the 'behind the scenes'. Firstly, i don't know how many of the riders understand the work put into the stables by: Ros, George, Jack, and also the new helpers Heidi and Justine. Everyday these people work hard to get all the horses cleaned out. Those of you that jump at the Tuesday night probably don't realise how much it adds onto the day; and how tiring it can be. However Ros still takes us, so please make sure to thank her. During my work experience I arrived at 7.45 and George arrived at 8. We mucked out the horses and did all the hay nets and waters, then we would go to the cafe for breakfast and me and Ros, or George would travel to see the other horses. I also helped practise boxing the horses; for instance an awkward Belle! Sadly on my second day of work experience Tuppence had to be put down, I distracted the other horses, who were in a separate field, so they would not get upset. It was a very tragic loss for everyone. However there were all the other horses who still needed seeing too. A lot of the time we were boxing horses,;picking food up for them, and changing waters at the different yards. On the second week when the weather had cleared up a bit, i exercised some of the horses. I would leave the field late evening; i was meant to leave at four, however i was happy to help after my working time, as many of you riders will know the working times are hard to set, because working with horses can be very unpredictable. I enjoyed every minute of my work experience and it was a pleasure to help out. The company of Ros, Jack and George was great, and they were so lovely, kind and generous to me, which I was really grateful for. Thank you for a wonderful work experience. :)
